What is a Portrait?

I am very interested in portraits, but I was stuck on what part to focus on. It felt cliche to focus on the eyes, so I analyzed the body and fumbled on the hands, how our hands look, how our hands interact with our environment, and how these hands affect who we are. This project continues to incite my fascination because every interview I gather transforms the way I see people's stories. In the beginning, I was thankful because the interviews and pictures were friends of mine but with time grew courage and with courage grew boldness to discover fascinating people in my community. My hope is to show the beautiful advice given through these conversations about their hands.

"I think that is really important for people to understand. Just because you did something for yourself and putting yourself first doesn’t mean you're a bitch... Just because you are doing something for yourself doesn’t mean it is bad. I don’t think putting yourself in front of others isn’t a bad thing. It does sound kind of mean but there is a fine line between being mean and being strong."

"Not everyone will be your friend and to be okay with that. And to do math homework on time instead of put it off like an idiot."

"Don’t be afraid to have scars in your life whether they are emotional or physical but rather see them as important aspects of your life. Those scars don’t show that you are weak but show you are strong. They are a daily reminder you are going to be okay."

"Try your best and not be so hard on yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others! Don’t get caught up in the small things, enjoy the people and the experiences. Especially now being in a pandemic and not seeing my friends all the time or getting to do theatre. Things you think would never get taken away, did get taken, and I wish I had appreciated it more before."

"Don’t worry about being cool. Its okay to be weird. Stay dedicated to the things you care about."

SOMEONE WHO CARES

"Never give up. Try as hard as you can. Try to find good in everybody. Try to find good in everything. Try to be positive leave the negativity behind you. Its ok to cry and to be sad but also to try to spread your joy. Be compassionate towards other people."

SOMEONE OUT OF SCHOOL

"Trust yourself and dive in! I think a lot of freshmen are scared to try new things and miss out on cool opportunities. I have no regrets even though I made mistakes, they made me who I am Gods plan can be confusing and painful, but it is also perfect and complete!"

SOMEONE LEARNING

I would tell my younger self to be gentle with myself and understand that things take time. It takes time to understand myself better, it takes time to heal from grief, it takes time to get used to change, it takes time to make a true friend, it takes time to work hard and improve your passion and studies, it takes time to grow. So be patient and gentle with yourself"

SOMEONE WHO HAS GRACE

"I think that for somebody who does feel anxious, to remember that it is not indefinite, and to not dwell on it. Take a deep breath and start doing something that make you feel happy. Dance has always been my escape from everything. When I dance there is nothing else that is happening in the world."

"Don't be such a push over. It's okay to say no."

"Not everything is perfect. Take the things that aren’t perfect and making the most of it and to find the joy."
